Anycast is a technique for "cloning" one server in multiple locations, all of which respond to the same IP address and all of which contain identical data.

Anycast root name server is an exact copy or mirror of one of the authoritative 13 servers; it contains identical data and performs exactly the same function, but can be located anywhere in the world.

Anycast addressing is a good solution to provide localization for services and servers in order to obtain robustness, redundancy and resiliency.

The nearest server will respond to the queries and send the data requested

Importance of anycast
  • Designed for short queries
  • Provides a level of redundancy
  • Overall service can be insulated from Denial of Service Attacks (DOS)
  • Traffic is routed to the closest server
  • Service leverages on backbone infrastructure
  • Once set up, service is relatively easy to clone
How Anycast work?
  • Nodes located around a network
  • THE SAME network information
  • THE SAME data (usually)
  • DIFFERENT servers
  • The routing system guides a request from a client towards an appropriate node (nearest or best nodes as viewed by routing topology)
